Owls take flight

The Owls are studying an aspen community. Intensive and in-close observations are required. A dry snow fell in the morning, tiny pellets that made a dry sound as it fell across parkas and jackets. Then a wind came and drove the sun away. The Teton mountains were nearby; ghostly mist hid the peaks. Wind traveling through the nearby pines sounded like the rush of water. A hawk, unobserved by the students below, went skidding through invisible updrafts of cold air. Everyone in the group made presentations about local ecosystems that face a range of challenges. So how does the world of Brooklyn connect to the world of Yellowstone? That is the challenge for our students. Since adults have not yet provided an answer, what these 8th graders bring to bear on hard dilemmas will effect the world's future. Back at camp a hard rain turned to driving snow. Now the sun is out.
